Tides of You
The ocean does not wait for you.
It pulls and pushes,
endless, unrelenting,
washing the shore clean only to leave it raw again.
I stand at the edge,
my feet sinking into the sand,
wondering how it feels to let go completely.
The salt in the air,
the taste of what’s never quite forgotten,
the pull of what remains just out of reach.
You are like the tide.
A wave that comes and goes,
swelling in my chest,
leaving its mark and then retreating.
But it always returns,
as sure as the moon calls it back to me.
I try to hold you,
but you slip through my fingers
like water,
like memories,
like everything I was afraid to hold too tightly.
The ocean does not wait for you.
And neither do I.
I will let the tide carry me,
carry all of me,
until I am nothing but waves and salt,
until I am nothing but the space between you and me.
